It is believed that livestock has been auctioned at Appleby Road, Kendal for more than 135 years. Tuesday saw the last sale at the North West Auctions Mart before it re-locates to its new site.

It was a poignant day for many farmers and also buyers who have supported the market for many years.

The sale began with a monthly sale of pigs of all classes and breeds. Trade across the board was good to the end. The final pig sold was a Saddleback from K. Singleton, Bootle Station which sold at £150 to Dave Morland, Butchery Manager for Westmorland Services, Tebay.

A good entry of 1367 prime sheep included 1145 prime hoggs and 222 ewes Hoggs averaged 156p/kg with all classes showing a significant rise on the week. The final prime hogg was presented by NWA Fieldsman George Harryman and sold for the Great North Air Ambulance and Cancer Research. The generosity of all the sheep buyers, several local farmers and the auctioneers enabled the hogg to be sold nine times over to raise more than £1,260.

The final sheep to be sold was a Herdwick ram from George Redmayne , Gowan Bank. It made £70 and was purchased by Andrew Thompson, Carnforth.

Hexham & Northern Marts had 609 head of store cattle and suckled calves forward at last Friday’s sale.
According to auctioneers, trade for older forward sorts was slightly easier on the week with buyer caution evident. However, the sale peaked at £1480 for a Limousin cross steer at 22 months from Willie Patterson, Halton Red House, Hexham. Five further bullocks realised over £1400 and no fewer than thirteen sold in excess of £1300, including and Angus cross steer at £1355 from John Bramwell, High Barns, Horsley.
With a good crowd of buyers present for younger sorts and shapely types in particular this class saw increased demand for both bullocks and heifers. A number of well-bred cattle under 10 months were subject to a fast trade. These included Limousin cross steers from Tom Teasdale, Kellah at £1045; Alan Dent, Beamwham at £1030 and Arthur and Richard Storrow, Willimoteswick at £1010. In addition a heifer from Robert Stephenson, West Mill Hills sold for £1005.
