Judge, Ashley Fleming, from Co. Down, Northern Ireland has just awarded the heifer championship to the Jersey, Clydevalley Govennor Flora, by Griffens Governr, owned and bred by the Hunter family from Shotts, Lanarkshire and shown by Alison Hunter.

Mr Fleming said he was looking for an animal which was the closest representative to the top of the breed.

He described his champion as having ‘tremendous ring presence and was clearly enjoying being at the event.’

He said she had a a tremendously long body, moved exceptionally well, had quality of bone and rib structure.

In taking this championship the heifer continued her unbeaten show ring record having  previously been interbreed heifer champion at the Royal Highland and champion at the Scottish Calf Show. 

There was no reserve champion but in taking the title the Jersey had to beat the Holstein, Red and White and Ayrshire class winners.

The winning Holstein heifer was Blythbridge Elegant Christabel from Colin and Alister Laird, West Linton, Peebleshire. By the home bred, Blythbridge Elegant Dundee out of a home-bred cow. She took the heifer breed championship at the Royal Highland.

The red and white winning heifer was a Holstein, Crockers Rock Stocking Red, owned by Richard Bowen, Worcester and her breeders, Paul and Mary Bradley, from the Isle of Wight.

She has been interbreed champion and the New Forsest and Hampshire show and reserve champion red and white at the Dariy and Livestock Event this year.

The Ayrshire winner was Marleycote Fawn from Baynes and Sons, Hexham, Northumberland. Home-bred by Des Prairies Potter, she was reserve champion as the All Breeds Calf Show last year.
